Tips for Getting a Full-Time Position

Tips for Getting a Full-Time Position

  • Develop an excellent resume. Check out the Crafting a Resume section.
  • Attend the GT Career Fair in September to inquire about full-time positions. Also check for other career fairs on campus during Spring semester.
  • Plan to begin your search as early as possible since many companies and agencies have application deadlines at various times during the year. The busiest time of year for full-time position recruiting is during fall semester, regardless of your graduation date.
  • Clarify your areas of interest and expertise. Target those areas with specific employment goals in mind. Many people think that having very broad interests encompassing many employment areas is beneficial and makes them seem flexible and more employable. In reality a productive job search requires narrowing down to a specific industry or industry segment. Targeting the employers within that segment provides a finite and more manageable group to go after.
  • With an area of interest in mind, take the time to identify potential employers early. With specific employers targeted, make networking a regular activity to increase your chances of attaining publicized and unpublicized openings.
  • Register with CareerBuzz to access job listings made available specifically to Tech students. Upload your resume and check back frequently to see changes in listings and see feedback from employers - don't wait for employers to contact you!
  • Sign-up for interviews through CareerBuzz, one of the Career Tools offered by Career Services. Most campus interviews will be held during the fall and spring semesters and posted on CareerBuzz.
  • Check Upcoming Student Programs on our homepage to find the dates and times of the workshop series presented by Career Services that includes sessions on resume writing, interviewing, job search strategies, business etiquette and others.
  • If you are within one term of graduation, please register with Alumni Career Services.
  • A good job search strategy, like a marketing plan in business, will provide you with a framework for achieving your career goals. To be a winning job candidate, you must research potential employers effectively and network extensively.
